Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the NEC engineering licensure exam and how to use this preparation platform effectively.
About the NEC Exam
What is the NEC engineering licensure exam?
The Nepal Engineering Council (NEC) licensure exam is a mandatory examination for engineering graduates who wish to practice professionally in Nepal. It tests core engineering knowledge across subjects relevant to your discipline (e.g., Computer Engineering). Passing this exam is required to obtain an NEC license number, which is needed for employment in many government and private sector engineering roles.
Who is eligible to sit for the NEC exam?
Graduates holding a recognized Bachelor's degree in engineering (BE/B.Tech) from a college affiliated with a recognized university are eligible. The degree must be in the relevant engineering discipline. Some institutions may require candidates to have their degree verified/registered by NEC before examination.
How many questions are in the NEC exam and what is the passing score?
The NEC exam typically consists of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to be completed within 2 hours. Each question carries 1 mark with no negative marking. The passing score is generally set at 50% (50 out of 100), but you should always verify the current cut-off on the official NEC website at nec.gov.np.
What subjects are covered in the Computer Engineering NEC exam?
The Computer Engineering NEC exam covers: Data Structures & Algorithms, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Database Management Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Architecture & Organization, Theory of Computation, Compiler Design, Microprocessors, Digital Logic, Object-Oriented Programming, and Mathematics for Computing (Discrete Math, Probability). Focus on fundamentals and conceptual understanding.
How often is the NEC exam conducted?
The NEC exam is typically conducted once or twice per year. Exact schedules and application deadlines are published on the official NEC website. It is recommended to register well in advance as seats may be limited.
Using This Platform
Is this platform free to use?
Yes, this NEC Prep platform is completely free to use. All practice sets, mock exams, and resources are available at no cost. There is no account required to start practising.
How are the MCQ sets organized?
Each practice set contains 100 randomized multiple-choice questions drawn from all major Computer Engineering topics. Questions are shuffled each time to simulate real exam conditions. You have a 2-hour timer, a question palette to track answered/unanswered questions, and you receive instant scoring and explanations upon submission.
Does this platform save my progress?
Yes. Your progress (selected answers, timer, and current page) is saved locally in your browser's localStorage. If you accidentally close the tab or navigate away, your progress will be restored when you return. Note: clearing your browser data will erase saved progress.
How many practice sets are currently available?
Currently, 3 complete sets (Set 1, Set 2, Set 3) for Computer Engineering are available, each containing 100 questions. Civil Engineering sets are under development. More sets will be added regularly — check back often.
Will answers and explanations be shown after the exam?
Yes. After submitting or when time runs out, you will see a detailed score breakdown and can review every question in review mode. Correct answers are highlighted in green and incorrect selections in red, helping you identify weak areas.
Exam Tips & Strategy
How should I prepare for the NEC exam?
Start by going through the official NEC syllabus carefully. Revise core concepts from your textbooks (CLRS for DSA, Tanenbaum for Networks, Silberschatz for OS/DBMS). Then use this platform to take timed practice sets under exam conditions. Review incorrect answers, identify weak topics, and revisit those chapters. Aim to complete at least 2-3 full mock sets before your exam date.
What time management strategy should I use?
With 100 questions in 2 hours, you have approximately 72 seconds per question. Do not spend more than 1 minute on any single question. Use the question palette to mark difficult questions and return to them after completing easier ones. Attempt all questions since there is no negative marking.
Which topics carry the most weight?
Based on previous exam patterns, Data Structures & Algorithms, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, and Database Management typically have the highest question density. However, all syllabus topics are testable. Ensure you have at least basic familiarity with every topic listed in the official syllabus.
